Kapchorwa, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in the Sebei region have arrested 20 members of a cult and charged them for holding an illegal assembly and unlawful procession.
Dressed in white outfits with walking sticks, the group headed by one Swaibu Sande, a resident of Kapchorwa started the journey early Friday heading to a mountain in Bukwo for prayers. Sande calls himself a prophet sent by God to deliver people to his kingdom.
Fredmark Chesang, the Sipi region police spokesperson said that the 20 were intercepted while on the journey that started in Kapchorwa on Friday. At the time of their arrest, the members were crossing through Kween district. They intended to walk a distance of close to 80 kilometres to Bukwo.
Chesang says that the members come from various religious denominations, among them the Muslims, Catholics, Pentecostals and Protestants. He adds that investigations to establish the motive of the group have already started and when complete, they will be aligned in the courts of law.
The twenty suspects are currently held at Kapchorwa central police station.
