Buliisa, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The fate of more than 3,500 people affected by floods in Buliisa District is uncertain when schools resume in two weeks.
The victims were displaced in March as a result of the rising water levels of Lake Albert.
Some of the affected people are from the landing sites of Kawaibanda, Butiaba, Boma, Kigangaizi, Tugombili, Walukuba, Bugoigo, Kamagongoro, Kigungu, Serule, Piida, Waisoki, Triangle and Magali in Butiaba Sub County.
They sought shelter at Butiaba, Bugoigo and Wanseko Primary Schools among others, where they are still living up to date.
However, with schools set to resume, the victims are concerned about their next destination.
Kenneth Abigaba one of the affected victims at Wanseko wonders why it has taken the government seven months to resettle them.
Sylvia Kusemerewa, a resident of Kabolwa landing site whose house was completely submerged by the floods say she currently has no other alternative place apart from Butiaba Primary School where has settled for seven months.
Rogers Tugume a resident of Songalendu in Buliisa town Council says to date life has become very difficult as they still lack food, clean water and medical supplies.
Patrick Okumu, a resident of Butiaba landing site says as the schools are set to reopen government should immediately intervene and resettled them.
Amos Asiimwe the Resident District Commissioner Buliisa says they informed the Office of the Prime Minister about the plight of the victims, but they are yet to respond.
In August, the Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Solomon Gafubusa Iguru tasked the government to immediately extend relief food to thousands of people who were affected by floods in Buliisa.
This was after the Kingdom officials led by Andrew Byakutaga, the Kingdom Prime Minister rushed to Buliisa district to assess the magnitude of the destruction caused by the floods on the Kingdom subjects.
