46 CSO’s accredited to conduct 2021 voter education in Uganda

Kampala, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  The electoral commission (EC) has accredited 46 civil society organizations (CSO’s) to conduct 2021 election sensitization in Uganda.

Paul Bukenya, the EC Media and Public Relations manager says the 46 CSO’s include National NGO Forum, Africa Freedom of Information Centre, Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU), Coalition Centre for Electoral Democracy (CCEDU), Centre for Basic Research, Action for Development (ACFODE) and the Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE).

Bukenya, says the 46 CSO’s have been accredited to support the EC’s voter education and sensitization function throughout Uganda for 2021 general elections.

The EC is mandated to formulate voter education and awareness campaigns before, during and after elections to have a free, fair and an all-inclusive general election for 2020/ 2021.

Bukenya says the EC has developed a manual that explains each stake holder’s roles, obligations, responsibilities and guidelines to follow during the 2021 general elections. The CSO’s will use the information generated by the EC on voter, media, candidates and political rights, freedom, roles and responsibilities, ahead of the 2020/ 2021 general elections.

Ivan Mwaka, Manager Election Observation at Citizen Coalition for Electoral Democracy (CCEDU) says they have trained 60 election observers to monitor elections during the 2021 general elections in Uganda and they have been dispatched to the field. They have been trained in observing the activities done by the electoral commission in terms of nominations, campaigns, how the election laws are being followed, procedures and guidelines to deter fraud and violence during the 2021 elections.

The general elections in Uganda will take place between 10th January and 8th February 2021.
