Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has remanded Aggrey Mugisha, the Director of Al Bayan Media Limited, for failing to remit contributions for his employees to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

Mugisha appeared before the court on Monday afternoon, where six counts were read to him. The court heard that between January 2021 and December 2022, Mugisha failed to remit social contributions and statutory penalties amounting to over 264 million shillings to the NSSF.

His company, Al Bayan Media Limited, located at Ham Towers on Makerere Hill, is also charged with being an eligible employer that negligently failed to remit social contributions. Al Bayan Media Limited is described as a media and entertainment technology company that builds platforms for new linear and digital initiatives.

Mugisha denied the charges and attempted to apply for bail. However, Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi, who was sitting in for Magistrate Winnie Nankya, stated that he was not handling the case. Although Kayizzi was willing to hear the bail application, both Mugisha’s lawyers and the State Attorney, Ivan Kyazze, disagreed. Kyazze argued that it would be better to wait for the trial magistrate to handle the bail application.

Kayizzi agreed, noting that Mugisha had been brought to court following a warrant of arrest issued on July 19, 2024, after he defied several criminal summons. To avoid jeopardizing the case, Kayizzi declined to entertain the bail application. Mugisha has been remanded to Luzira Prison until September 5, 2024.
