Algeria edges Crested Cranes 2-1

Jinja, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Crested Cranes faced a tough challenge in their first leg of the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against Algeria. The match took place at the Njeru-based FUFA Technical Center on Wednesday, resulting in a 2-1 victory for Algeria. Chebel Imane scored the first goal of Algeria in the 46th minute, followed by Ghouthia Habiba’s goal in the 51st minute.

This win significantly boosts Algeria’s chances of qualification, securing an impressive away victory against Uganda, with a return leg scheduled in their home country. Crested Crane’s lone goal came from a penalty shootout, courtesy of team captain Fauzia Najjemba in the 87th minute. Algeria’s head coach, Farid Benstiti, attributed the victory to the hard work and teamwork displayed by his players.

He mentioned that the uncomfortable weather conditions initially hampered their style of play, but the team showed resilience in the second half, capitalizing on their chances. Sofia Guellati, the team’s captain, acknowledged the challenges posed by the pitch but emphasized their determination to adapt to the situation. She expressed confidence that with a better pitch and the support of their fans in their home country, they would perform even better.

Crested Crane’s assistant coach, Ayub Khalifa, admitted setbacks in defense that cost them the match. However, he expressed optimism about reorganizing the team before the return leg in Algeria. Khalifa also highlighted efforts to improve the team’s striking capabilities and conversion of chances into goals.

Najjemba acknowledged Algeria’s experience, with their players active in reputable women’s leagues across Europe. She saw this exposure as a learning opportunity for her team to compete effectively in their upcoming away encounter. Najjemba also mentioned that facing Algeria for the first time had its challenges but believed that with hard work and preparation, they could score more goals in their home stadium.
