Kampala, Uganda | PATRICIA AKANKWATSA | Kampala thumped with rhythm and melody on the June 21 as Alliance Française de Kampala (AFK) hosted a vibrant Fête de la Musique (World Music Day) celebration at the Sheraton Hotel gardens. The free concert, a Kampala tradition for years, brought together a diverse lineup of local and international stars, culminating in a high-energy performance by Ugandan music icon Azawi.
The evening started with the captivating performance by the Nilotika Cultural Ensemble followed by the irresistible grooves of Aliddeki who was followed by the soulful Joshua Baraka, who captivated the crowd with his smooth vocals and emotive lyrics.
Kenyan artist Makadem also known as His Nyatitiness, kept the energy high with his infectious tunes and his unique blend of African rhythms and global appeal. He played the traditional Nyatiti, along with the Kalimba and guitar.
As the night deepened, anticipation grew for the headline act. Azawi, a powerhouse vocalist and songwriter, took the stage and erupted into a crowd-pleasing set. Azawi, renowned for her dynamic stage presence and hit songs like “My Year” and “Slow Dancing,” delivered a show-stopping performance that had the audience dancing and singing along. Her electrifying energy set the tone for an unforgettable evening.
The event was a resounding success, showcasing the unifying power of music. AFK, known for fostering cultural exchange between France and Uganda, delivered a World Music Day celebration that lived up to its name. From the soulful melodies to the lively dance beats, the night was a testament to the rich tapestry of musical talent found in Uganda and beyond.
World Music Day is celebrated every year on June 21. The first World Music Day was observed in the year 1982 in France and since then, World Music Day has spread to other parts of the world and is now a global celebration of music.
