Amolatar, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Policemen at Amolatar police station last evening witnessed a rare event of their boss and senior citizen being arrested over the defilement of a minor.

ASP Maxman Okello Ochan who is soon retiring and clocking 60 years of age, has made history by being booked at his own station for the capital offence of allegedly defiling a 14 year old girl, which has been registered under SD Ref: 18/25/10/21.

Okello was apprehended by locals from Amirimiri ward, where they allegedly nabbed him defiling the child.

The new Amolatar Resident District Commissioner, George William Wopuwa told URN that he ordered for the OC’s arrest after four people stormed his office complaining over not being helped even after they caught the officer red handed defiling the kid.

The Amolatar Division Police Commander-DPC, Jacob Chepsikor earlier told URN on phone that he got a directive from the head of security in the district (RDC) to investigate the OC over alleged defilement. According to Chepsikor, they had to arrest the suspect after the victim confirming while facing the accused officer, who could not utter a word to defend himself regarding the girl’s accusation.

The victim told URN that she was tricked into meeting the officer by a boda boda man whom she knew. According to her, the boda boda rider took her together with her elder sister to a house in which the officer was already waiting for her with a condom in his hands. She says her sister was chased away before she could enter the house.

DPC Jacob Chepsikor again confirmed the OC’s arrest, but said being newly posted to the area, he had not yet recorded any other incident involving Okello Ochan.

He however says the suspect will have to individually face the law to defend himself.

Meanwhile, Harriet Adongo, the victim’s grandmother is now worried that her grandchild’s future is ruined because she is not sure of the suspect’s health condition and intention.

Denis Patrick Ojok, the district speaker told reporters that this is not the first time Okello is being implicated in defilement related incidents, saying at one point he saved a Uganda police motorcycle which Okello was riding from angry residents who wanted to set it ablaze.

Later in the day, angry residents under the leadership of Moses Okot Junior, the Kyoga South MP stormed the police station demanding proof of arrest of the suspect.

Moses Okot pledged to support the girl’s family by rehabilitating the girl and ensuring that justice is served. He added that with this arrest, the youth of Amolatar should remain vigilant in identifying wrong elements in the security forces.

The suspect has been transferred to the North Kyoga Region Police headquarters in Lira city.
