Amuru, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A woman whose leg was amputated after being shattered by a teargas canister fired by police is seeking compensation of Shillings 300 million.
26-year-old Zabedu Ismail Yasin, a businesswoman and resident of Warehouse cell in Elegu town council Amuru district was hit when police fired teargas to disperse supporters of Robert Kyagulanyi, the National Unity Platform presidential candidate on December 10th, 2020.
Zabedu who was conducting her hotel business that fateful day was rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital where doctors decided to amputate her leg on Monday this week due to extensive damage. The mother of four told URN on her sickbed at the hospital that she is in serious pain and can longer fend for herself and her family since she has lost one of her legs.
She told URN that she wasn’t even part of the protests but ended up being the major victim. Zabedu accused police of recklessness in handling a violent environment, something which she says contributed to her loss and disability.
She wants the police force to compensate her Shillings 300 million because they are the sole cause of her problems. Her husband Ismail Buga says police must pay because of negligence and suffering and damage caused to his wife and the family.
According to Buga, his wife was shot three times by police officers who were driving Kyagulanyi out of Elegu township. He explained that since the incident, no one has attended to them leaving them with a burden of more than Shillings 150,000 daily expense for treatment, feeding and upkeep at the hospital.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson has advised the victim and her family to file a formal complaint to the Aswa River Region Police Professional Standard Unit so that it can be forwarded to the top authorities.
