Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kapeule Ngole, a resident of Karita Sub County in Amudat district is in trouble for allegedly lying and presenting a forged National Identity card to the Justice, Catherine Bamugemereire Land Commission.
It all started after Simon Lomukele, a resident of Lokales village in Karita Sub County registered a complaint of land grabbing against Kapeule with the Commission sitting in Nakapiripirit district on Thursday.
Lomukele accused Kapeule of dragging him to court after grabbing his ancestral land in Lokales village measuring about 100 acres.
He told the Commission that when his family returned from Kenya to settle on the land in 2012 following insecurity in Karamoja, they found Kapeule occupying the land with the help of local leaders in the village.
He explained that the LC 1 executive members also took over some of his land, leaving him with small potion to settle.
Lomukele also revealed that the same land grabbers dragged him to court in Nakapiripirit and used their powers including claims about the purported death of his father in order to win the case.
According to Lomukele, the opportunists used the court verdict to chase him from his land forcing him to rent in a trading centre in Karita. When the Commission inquired from Kapeule who was also in the building, he confessed that his father, Nagur had died.
When asked when and where he died from, Kapeule said he doesn’t know. As the commission probed further, Johnson Katur, Kapeule’s father- in- law grabbed the microphone and told the Commission that his son-in-law was lying.
He said that Kapeule has been a cattle rustler who settled in Karita after marrying his daughter, Kuro Cheptai in 2015. He also revealed that Kapeule’s father was still alive and living in Kenya. “This man standing here is trying to grab land from that poor man.
He is a Kenyan who settled here after marrying my daughter. I have never told lies and I won’t start now in this gathering”, Katur confessed in a fully parked council hall. After probing into Kapeule’s life, Justice Bamugemereire demanded for his identity card prompting him to present a forged one.
Justice Bamugemereire handed over the suspect to police to help re-investigate the land case and promised to follow up with appeal case on the same land in Soroti.
The Commission is concluding its three day’s engagement with the communities and local leaders in Karamoja today. She started in Moroto and Napak on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
