Luanda, Angola | THE INDEPENDENT | Angola’s former president Jose Eduardo dos Santos has died after a long illness in a hospital in Barcelona.

Dos Santos, who ruled oil-rich Angola for close to 40 years from 1979, was “a statesman of great historical scale who governed … the Angolan nation through very difficult times,” said a statement from the Presidency.

Dos Santos stepped down in 2017, and was replaced by Angola’s current head of state, Joao Lourenco.
