Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Church of Uganda Archbishop Dr. Samuel Steven Kazimba has Joined the World Wide Fund for Nature- WWF to launch a drastic campaign against acts of environmental degradation in Uganda.

All Church of Uganda members will henceforth be required to engage in tree planting, minimize usage of plastic materials and to preach the message of saving the environment whenever they come together.

During a launching ceremony held at the archbishop’s office in Namirembe, Dr. Kazimba said that on top of the continuous calls to government to save the environment and its people from dangers of climate change, more practical efforts must be taken by members of the religious community.

He added that such deliberate acts of environmental degradation are partly leading to outbreaks of epidemics and pandemics like covid-19.

He explained that lifeline water bodies like River Nile, forests and the land cover have been heavily damaged by usage of plastic materials which are unnecessarily dumped hence the destruction of nature.

Kazimba also noted that since plastic materials according to scientists can take over 300 years to completely decompose, it is a disaster not only to Ugandans today but also to many generations to come.

The WWF country director David Duli listed a number of wildlife species Uganda is proud of but are now at risk of going extinct if no action is taken to eliminate usage and dumping of plastic materials, destruction of natural resources like forests and water bodies.

At the same function, the church of Uganda provincial secretary Rev. Capt. Canon William Ongeng requested the Archbishop to decampaign re-usage of dumped plastic materials especially by people in the rural areas because the act risks their lives.
