Archbishop Odama challenges world leaders to denounce violence

Gulu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Archbishop of Gulu, John Baptist Odama has expressed worries over the escalating levels of violence noting that it is causing suffering in the world.

He noted that it is saddening that the world is experiencing a spike in violent cases like murder, attacks by street gangs, gender-based violence, armed conflicts, disunity as well as crimes such as theft and corruption.

Archbishop Odama noted that this has caused unrest and suffering in the world, something he says has triggered the dark memories of the Lord`s Resistance Army insurgency and caused panic, especially in Northern Uganda.

Archbishop Odama made the plea on Saturday during the ordination of three priests and eight deacons from St Joseph`s Cathedral Church in Gulu City.

The ceremony attracted thousands of people among them were top government officials and politicians.

‘’It hurts me when I hear that killing is increasing among us, theft is increasing among us, violence is increasing, in Uganda corruption is increasing, there is little peace in some places, there is no unity in some places. This brings heart pains. Let us stand firm and turn the bad things into good,” he says.

He explained that the world currently needs everyone to stand firm in their faith to spread the gospel of Christ, preach peace, unity, and development noting that it is what the world desires.

His plea comes at a time when Gulu City is experiencing an increase in armed attacks by unsuspected street gangs, increased cases of murder in the Lango Sub-region as well as armed inter tribal conflicts in South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and war between Ukraine and Russia.

Martin Okot, a resident of Gulu City said that people have become frustrated due to the unbearable hardships hence prompting them into criminal activities and violence in order to get survival.
