Mogadishu,Somalia | THE INDEPENDENT | The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has paid glowing tribute to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for their contributions and exemplary service in promoting security and stability in Somalia.
At a ceremony held at the UPDF Headquarters in Sector One, Mogadishu on Monday, the acting ATMIS Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Marius Ngendabanka, commended soldiers from Uganda Battle Group 38 for their key role in fostering peace and stability.
Certificates of recognition and African Union medals were awarded to 33 distinguished soldiers for their exceptional service.
“The mission in Somalia remains complex and challenging, and the efforts of Battle Group 38 have significantly contributed to the safety of civilians and the promotion of peace and development in the region,” stated Maj.Gen Ngendabanka.
The Force Commander commended the soldiers for their dedication and tireless efforts in securing communities within the Banadir and Lower Shabelle regions. He emphasised that the medals and certificates they received were well-deserved, reflecting their bravery, commitment, and willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty.
The ATMIS Uganda Contingent Commander, Brig. Gen. Anthony Lukwago Mbuusi, also commended Battle Group 38 for their critical support and contributions to Somalia’s state-building and development efforts, in line with the ATMIS Mandate.
“Their critical role in collaborative offensive operations with the Somali Security Forces, safeguarding vital infrastructure, and weakening Al-Shabab’s influence has been instrumental in contributing to regional stability,”
The Contingent Commander encouraged the incoming battalion to leverage the valuable lessons learned from Battle Group 38 to ensure a smooth transition of security responsibilities to the Somali Security Forces, as ATMIS prepares for its scheduled withdrawal in December 2024.
Since deploying to Somalia in April 2022, Battle Group 38 have been actively involved in joint operations with the Somali Security Forces. Their efforts have focused on degrading Al Shabaab forces, securing main supply routes leading to the capital, Mogadishu, and protecting key population centers and installations in their assigned Area of Responsibility. The event was attended by several high-ranking military officials.
