Bars threaten efforts to sustain Luwero’s Covid-19 success story

Luwero, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The continued operation of bars and entertainment centres threaten the success so far registered in controlling the spread of Covid-19 across Luwero.

Luwero District Health Officer Dr Innocent Nkonwa says that the district has for the third week recorded no new Covid-19 infections, a trend attributed to both national and local measures aimed at containing the disease. Before this, Luwero district had recorded 580 cumulative cases of Covid-19 and 33 deaths.

However, Nkonwa says that the district’s zero infection rate is under threat because of the illegal operation of sectors that were listed among super-spreaders of the virus. His concern comes at the backdrop of reports that several bars have defied the presidential ban and resumed operations.

Luwero Resident District Commissioner Juliet Najjuma Ssenkole says that a number of bars are operating in the wee hours of the night disregarding a ban on bars and a nighttime curfew that was imposed by the president.

Najjuma added that she ordered arrest for some revellers and has since summoned all bar and hotel owners in Luwero town to appear before the district taskforce next week over defiance of the Covid-19 guidelines.

One of the entertainment places which have been summoned is Nimrod Hotel located in Luwero town. It has been accused of organizing parties as well as allowing revellers to drink alcohol in its bar section till late.

But Tom Lule, the Director of Nimrod Hotel explained that hotels across the country were allowed to operate by President Yoweri Museveni and guests who sleep there can enjoy other services as long as they can observe standard operating procedures.

Felix Mugizi, the Luwero District Police Commander says that he has intensified night patrols and will prosecute any owner who defies presidential directives.
