Police has this afternoon blocked Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Kizza Besigye from leaving the City Hall to Kalerwe, a Kampala suburb where the duo and others had planned to inspect civil works and other activities.
Lukwago told journalists in his office earlier that “no one would stop” him and those escorting him to inspect the activities around the city because it is his right to do so.
The fracas started when Lukwago and Besigye entered the same car and drove for a few meters towards the main exit of the City Hall where police blocked them. “Leave the mayor’s car and use your car that is behind,” a police officer told Besigye. But the ‘courageous’ Forum for Democratic Change leader refused to adhere to the orders of the police and ordered the driver to put up the car window screens.
By 3:00pm, the duo, police, journalists and onlookers were stranded and no visitor would be allowed in or out of the City Hall.
Police have in the recent weeks been fighting with the opposition trying to organise rallies which, police say are a cause of chaos in the city and a threat to business.
