Masaka, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Rt. Rev. Lawrence Mukasa, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luwero, has strongly condemned the alleged murders of parents by their own children driven by greed for property.
Bishop Mukasa expressed deep concern over the disturbing trend where children resort to killing their parents when denied land titles over family property.
His condemnation follows the arrest of four siblings accused of killing their 89-year-old mother, Nalujja Yowanina, allegedly to obtain a portion of the money she received from selling her land. The tragic incident occurred in Bbaale-Kamuzingiza village, Nnyimbwa Sub-County.
According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima, the suspects, all women, assaulted their mother, demanding the money from the land sale, leading to her death.
The exact amount of money and land in dispute is yet to be determined. The victim was rushed to John’s clinic in Bbowa but was pronounced dead at 5 p.m.
Bishop Mukasa denounced the heinous act as appalling and questioned the possible influence of drugs on the perpetrators.
He voiced his concerns during Mass on Sunday at St. Joseph Katikamu Catholic Parish, marking its 61st anniversary.
In an interview with Uganda Radio Network (URN), Ronald Ndawula, Luwero District National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairman representing Alice Kaboyo, the state minister for Luwero Triangle, echoed Bishop Mukasa’s condemnation of the killings.
Ndawula also lamented the rising incidents of bodaboda motorcycle riders’ killings. He urged parents to prioritize the care of their children during the school break, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children’s lives.
