Kitgum, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Boda boda leaders in Kitgum municipality in collaboration with the police have launched operations against errant members violating curfew guidelines.

The maiden operation conducted on Wednesday night saw 19 motorcycles impounded from various areas within Kitgum municipality.

Patrick Ociti Laboke, the Speaker Kitgum Active Boda Boda Association says that the motorcycles were impounded from various locations in Pandwong, Pager and Central divisions.

Laboke says the operation follows complaints by security officials against boda boda riders for the continuous violation of the 6 pm curfew deadline and alleged attacks against security personnel by the riders.

He says the operation will help them to weed out errant motorcyclists whether they are registered boda boda riders or not.

Simon Oyet, the chairperson of Boda Boda riders in Kitgum municipality says that the operation that started at 8pm on Wednesday night will go a long way in ensuring total adherence to the curfew guidelines by their members.

Oyet says the operation arose out of a security meeting with boda boda leaders in the municipality held with security heads in the district. Kitgum District Police Commander Tommy Eyaku told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that the impounded motorcycles will be released to their respective owners with caution.

He however says the owners will have to first present documents to prove ownership of the motorcycles. Last week, security personnel in the municipality raised concern over what they described as a new wave of aggression being perpetuated by boda boda riders against police and the army enforcing Covid-19 guidelines.

At least three security officers, two of them soldiers and a police officer were knocked and assaulted by errant boda boda riders during curfew hours three weeks ago.
