Bunyangabu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A boda boda rider has been shot dead in Bunyangabu district for reportedly defying the inter-district travel ban announced recently as one of the measures to contain surging cases of COVID-19.
The deceased has been identified as John Kugonza Rwahumura, aged 28 years and a resident of Nyansozi village in Mugusu town in Kabarole district.
Samuel Kusemererwa, an LC 1 chairman for Kibede village said the deceased was shot at by a security operative in UPDF uniform at Kibede trading centre where the traffic personnel had mounted a road block to enforce the inter-district travel movement ban between Kabarole and Bunyangabu district. He said the UPDF soldier has not yet been identified.
It’s reported that the deceased was stopped by the traffic police at Kibede but he ignored the signal and knocked one of the traffic officers. His action prompted one of the officer to shoot killing him on spot.
The Rwenzori West police spokesperson, Vicent Twesigye said he was out on leave and couldn’t speak about the incident.
But Julian Sara, the Kabarole Resident District Commissioner – RDC confirmed the incident warning riders to adhere to the presidential directive and respect traffic personnel.
On June 6th, President Yoweri Museveni among other directives ordered the closure of schools and the suspension of non-essential travel between districts in an attempt to reduce on the spread of the COVID-19.
