Gabarone, Botswana| THE INDEPENDENT REPORTER | Uganda’s She Pearls will be assured of home support at the UB Indoor Sports Arena when they take on fancied Jamaica in a Pool C decider on Wednesday.
After Uganda tamed the hosts on Monday, Botswana put themselves back in the race for a quartefinal place by shocking Jamaica 48-46 on Tuesday in the ongoing Netball World Youth Cup. Victory for Uganda over Jamaica will guarantee the hosts a place in the quarterfinals.
At six points, Botswana and Uganda are in the driving seat for a place in the quarters, but a victory for Jamaica will complicate Pool C.
A victory for Jamaica will see three teams tied with six points, and according to the rules the goal ratio would determine who advances. Uganda have a huge goal difference already and are favourites to top the group, and depending on the margin of victory for Jamaica, the result could still see Botswana through.
The She Pearls look good bets to make it as it is unless they suffer a massive collapse against Jamaica. Jamaica on the other hand have to beat Uganda by more than 6 goals to deny Botswana.
The winner of the Group will take on Group D runners-up Fiji on Thursday at 1pm, with the Group C runner up to face Group D winners England.
The Netball World Youth Cup is the pinnacle of netball competition for emerging players who are under 21 years of age and the INF has held an U21 international competition every four years since 1988.
The African countries competing are Uganda, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
This is the first time the International Netball Federation (INF) is holding an international event on the African continent.
