Bunyangabu district MPs task RDC to investigate ghost Saccos

Emyooga associations in Bunyangabu district have ghost beneficiaries.

Bunyangabu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Members of Parliament from Bunyangabu district have tasked the Resident District Commissioner Jolly Tibamanya to investigate the validity of Emyooga associations.

Davis Kamukama, the Bunyangabu County MP and Peace Mutuuzo Regis, the District Woman MP who are currently assessing the impact of the Emyooga program note that they discovered that some of the beneficiary associations were non-existent.

The district received 560 Million Shillings that was given to 18 selected groups. Kamukama says they received reports of bribery where some groups allegedly paid 50,000-100,000 shillings at various stages to access the funds. He also says some of the beneficiaries are not residents in the district.

Kamukama said several Saccos and associations do not have operational offices and known addresses which is one of the conditions for the Microfinance Support Centre to consider the Saccos for the funds.

Mutuuzo is concerned that the program which targets specific groups could end up in the wrong hands.

During the assessment, the MPs discovered that one of the Saccos, Bunyangabu Journalists Sacco, did not have a single journalist as its members.

Tibamanya said there could be a possibility that wrong people formed associations to tap into the funds.

However, he says the program’s implementation in the district had begun before he was transferred to the district adding that they have taken interest in investigating the groups.
