Hoima, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Livestock farmers in Bunyoro sub-region have asked the government to reopen livestock markets.
In June, President Yoweri Museveni closed livestock markets across the country as part of the measures to curtail the spread of Covid-19. According to the President, the livestock markets attract people from different parts of the country, which could further spread the disease.
The livestock farmers say that they are struggling to provide for their families due to a lack of income.
David Mushaija, a farmer in Kasenyi lyato in Buseruka sub-county, Hoima district explains that life has become unbearable for him and his entire family following the closure of the livestock markets. He says that he cannot sell off some animals to buy food, medicine and drugs for his family members and the animals.
Lam Karubanga, another farmer in Buseruka says that they are struggling to buy drugs for their animals. He adds that he is on the verge of losing all of his animals since the majority of them have fallen sick.
Bernard Rukunda, a herdsman in Buliisa says that just like other businesses that are operating, the markets can reopen under tight Covid-19 prevention guidelines.
Fred Beronda, a herdsman in Kikuube is worried that some of their family members could succumb to hunger since they don’t have money to buy them food. He too asks the government to reopen the livestock markets under tight guidelines.
