Canon Baalwa to serve as Kampala’s 5th Assistant Bishop

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Reverend Canon Frederick Jackson Baalwa has been selected as the fifth Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese of the Church of Uganda. At its extraordinary meeting sitting on the morning of August 13,2024 at All Saints’ Cathedral Kampala, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda who is also the Bishop is the diocese of Kampala, The Most Rev. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu selected The Ven Rev Baalwa replacing Dr. Hannington Nsubuga Mutebi.

Dr. Mutebi has been Assistant Bishop since 2014, having been selected by then Archbishop Stanley Ntagali the previous year, having served as Cathedral Provost under Archbishop Luke Orombi.

Mutebi, born in 1960, was diagnosed with a life-threatening cancer, but recovered following an operation in the UK, and returned to full service in 2020.

He has overseen the construction works and near completion of the new All Saints Cathdral Building at Nakasero, first as Provost and then as Assistant Bishop. Can Baalwa served in different capacities while a Priest in Kampala Diocese, including including at All Saints Cathdral, Kampala, being Vicar at St Stephens, Kisugu Church of Uganda, and previously, Chaplain Uganda Christian University, Mukono.

He is described by many as a simple, loving and approachable pastor. The Assistant Bishop, who is the resident bishop, of Kampala Diocese is chosen by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, who is, by constitution, the Bishop of Kampala Diocese. The Assistant Bishop is the only Bishop in Uganda who is not elected by the House of Bishops.
