Catholic priest under investigation over death of suspected robber

Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson Muhammad Nsubuga confirmed report.

Masaka, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Masaka is investigating a priest attached to Bisanje Catholic Parish over the suspicious death of a suspected robber.

The priest, Reverend Fr Richard Mugisha was summoned in relation to the death of Ronald Kyeyune, 30, a suspected robber who had allegedly broken into the priest’s house last night. It is alleged that the suspect was apprehended by the village security team after allegedly accessing the priest’s residence through the roof.

Muhammad Nsubuga, the greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson says that Fr Mugisha called police to alert them about the arrest of a person who had allegedly broken into the windscreen of his motor vehicle. However, the suspect died shortly after arriving at Masaka Central Police Station.

Nsubuga says they have now opened up a general inquiry file about the death of the suspect and summoned Fr Mugisha to explain the circumstances under which the incident happened.

But Fr Mugisha told Uganda Radio Network that he had not been informed about the suspect’s death, but added that he was unhurt by the time he was handed over to police.

He explains that the suspect who was apprehended by the village security team on a routine night patrol was naked and had smeared himself with motor vehicle oil which raises suspicion about his real motive. However, he dismisses the fear that he was beaten by a mob.
