Cheptegei retained as athletes captain for 2024 Olympics

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Joshua Cheptegei has been retained as Uganda’s Olympic team Captain.

Cheptegei was suggested by teammates who are part of the 2024 Paris Olympics squad and was approved by the President Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), Dominic Otuchet.

Otuchet said that Cheptegei’s experience in leading the team in previous years is motivating. “Having an athlete who is a role model in the sport to be a Captain like Cheptegei motivates teammates, Coaches, and UAF, and the result is a Triumph,” he said.

Cheptegei graciously saluted the choice by teammates and UAF to assign him with the obligation of representing them during the Olympic Games slated for July 26th to August 11th in Paris, France. The highly anticipated formidable championship has attracted celebrated countries in long-distance running like Kenya, Uganda, Eritrea, and Ethiopia.

“I welcome the remarkable trust by my teammates and approval by UAF and I will be transparent as much as possible,” Cheptegei told the Uganda Radio network at the National training camp in Kapchorwa.

Joy Cheptoyek, the double Olympic qualifier in 10,000 and 5,000 meters acknowledged that Cheptegei has a significant leadership trait trusting that, any assistance demanded by the team can effectively be advocated by the 10,000-meter world record holder.

“He is very effective when it comes to team building, he has exhibited this severally while he leads team Uganda in the previous different international championships.” She said.
