Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Ugandan basketball sides Power, City Oilers and UCU made it three wins out of three as the FIBA Africa Zone 5 Club Championships entered day three Tuesday at Lugogo in Kampala.

The game of the day was in men’s Group A where Rwanda’s Patriots gave Uganda’s City Oilers as much as they got, and kept fans off their seats for long spells.

City Oilers went into halftime 45-42 before Patriots took a 61-60 lead in the 3rd quarter to set up a tense final quarter.

New signing Jordan Mayez did most of the damage in the final quarter as a total 19 points from Adarius Pegues ensured the defending champions Oilers sealed it 77-73.

The other Ugandan men’s side Power was also made to sweat  in their Group B match against Kenya’s KPA.

KPA led for most of the first half, taking a 33-29 lead at the break before Power got back into contention and eventually snatched  what looked like a comfortable 73-60 victory.

UCU Mukono had set the tone for the day earlier, with yet another commanding 93-36 victory over Don Bosco to keep their 100% record in the women’s round robin contest. They had a day earlier come from behind to stun Kenya’s KPA 69-68.

The week-long tournament that started on Sunday, enters the quarterfinals Thursday at Lugogo.

The Zone 5 winners will qualify for the FIBA Africa Champions Cup set to be held in Tunisia in December.
