Mayuge, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Mayuge district have confirmed the death of Umar Maka, a resident who was shot during a scuffle with police officers at Musubi landing site in Bukabooli sub county on Sunday.
It is alleged that it all started after Joseph Osaka, a fisherman at Musubi landing site reported the disappearance of his Yamaha boat engine early last week.
Police mounted a search and recovered the boat engine from Dolwe island in Namayingo district, where Maka is reported to have sold it to some fishermen. Police tracked down Maka and arrested him on Sunday. However, while being transferred to Musubi police post, his relative only identified as Bampalana grabbed a gun from the officer in charge, Abdallah Kataba in an attempt to obstruct the officers from their duties.
Kataba tried to recover his firearm from Bampalana but met resistance from Maka leading to a scuffle. Maka was shot dead. Police later transferred his lifeless body to Mayuge health center III mortuary for postmortem.
Ezra Maganda, the Musubi landing site chairperson says that residents within his area are fond of obstructing the arrests of their colleagues, which has promoted lawlessness.
“Some of our youths behave as if they are above the law and they don’t want to follow legal procedures in criminal matters. They were only taking him to record a statement at the police post where he could be easily released on bond but even after explaining to him all that, he still resisted,” he said.
Mayuge District Police Commander Bashir Siriba has confirmed the incident, saying that a team of police detectives is already on the ground to expedite inquiries into the matter.
