The Independent Uganda: You get the Truth we Pay the Price
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Colonel Atwooki Ndahura, the former Director of Crime Intelligence in Uganda Police Force has finally regained his freedom. He was granted bail this morning by the General Court Martial sitting in Makindye Chaired by Lt General Andrew Gutti.
Colonel Ndahura and each of his sureties executed bond of Shillings 10 million and 5 million not in cash respectively. The sureties included the newly promoted Major General Apollo Kasita, Col. Francis Kashaka, Col. Milton Katarinyebwa, Col. Wilson Kabera, the Commandant at the School of Combat Engineers and Retired Captain. Kahonda Donozio, the Ruhinda county Member of parliament.
As part of his bail conditions, Lt General Andrew Gutti restricted Nduhura’s movements to Kampala and Wakiso district. Prior to delivering his ruling, General Gutti noted that Ndahura is still a serving UPDF officer who has never been implicated in any scandal is therefore entitled to bail.
After granting him bail, Lt General Gutti asked Col Ndahura to tell him if he still remembered the conditions, the smiling Col replied that they were many but he knows that if he defaults them, bail will be cancelled. Col Ndahura’s relatives who were in court couldn’t hide their excitement as they were full smiles during the session.
About the Case
Col Ndahura was picked up from Masindi from Peace Corner Hotel on June 11th, 2018 by Uganda People’s Defense Forces soldiers led by Major General Sam Okiding, the Commandant of the UPDF Artillery base in Masindi. He was locked up in Makindye barracks where he spent eight months before he was arraigned in the General Court Martial.
He was charged together with six senior police officers and the former Inspector General of Police, General Kale Kayihura with aiding and abetting kidnaps of Rwandan nationals in Uganda. The other suspects are Nixon Agasirwe , Richard Ndaboine , Patrick Muramira ,Jonas Ayebaza and Kitagenda Abel Muyomba.
It is also alleged that Col Ndahura and his co accused failed to supervise war materials and ensure accountability for the fire arms and ammunition in Uganda Police Force Units such as the Flying Squad Unit, Witness Protection Unit and Crime Intelligence.
They are also accused of issuing fire arms to unauthorized group of Boda Boda 2010 members led by their patron, Abdullah Kitatta. The suspects allegedly committed the offense between 2010 and 2018. The suspects have since pleaded not guilty to the charges. Col. Ndahura now becomes the second suspect to be granted bail following Kayihura.
