Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Lyantonde Grade One Magistrate’s court has issued second criminal summons to Kabula County Member of Parliament, James Kakooza to answer assault charges.
Abudallah Khaiza issued the summons on Tuesday after Kakooza failed to appear before court.
It is alleged that Kakooza allegedly assaulted Lad Kamalumba former Kooki ward C Lyantonde town council representative during the 2016 National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primary elections.
Prosecution alleges that Kakooza and others still at large beat up Kamalumba outside the legislator’s residence after realizing that he had called police accusing them of ballot stuffing.
In his statement at Lyantonde Police Station, Kamalumba revealed that he peeped in the legislator’s compound where he saw people stuffing ballots and decided to call police.
Kakooza’s lawyer Ausi Kibuule Zimumenya of Mayanja, Nakibuule and Company Advocates told court that Kakooza received the first summons last month but had travelled abroad on official duties.
Kibuule asked court to adjourn the matter to April 16th 2019 saying that during this time the legislator will be back in the country and he will appear before court.
The prosecution led by Anthony Wambi told court that prosecution is ready to proceed with the case asking the presiding magistrate to issue second criminal summons to Kakooza.
