SV Werder Bremen striker Melvyn Lorenzen has been called to the Uganda national soccer team Cranes for their penultimate African Cup of Nations qualifying match June 4 away against Botswana. Lorenzen’s father is Ugandan while mother German.

Werder Bremen posted on twitter and their facebook page the news of the call up, saying “Melvyn Lorenzen has received his first call-up to the Uganda national team ahead of their CAF / Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers!”

Twenty-one year-old Lorenzen, who is eligible to play for Uganda as he is yet to feature for any other national team, was born in England but plays in Germany for giants SV Werder Bremen.

He has mainly come on as a substitute since joining in 2013, and has this year made 9 appearances. Werder Bremen finished 13th in the 18 team Germany Bundesliga.

Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic, who announced the full squad today to prepare for the qualifiers, told The Independent that he was confident the Germany-based player will make it. He asked soccer governing body FUFA to get the necessary documentation for him and FIFA approvals.

“I am confident about this and I have spoken a lot with him already. His father is actually from Fort Portal but his mother is German,” said Micho.
