Thousands of Crime Preventers brought Ggaba in Makindye Division, Kampala to standstill on Sunday by engaging in community service and a celebratory march.
The Crime Preventers, a group of youth mainly recruited in the past year to help in community policing, converged at St.Dennis Ssebugwawo SS Ggaba from all over the country. They started the day by cleaning Ggaba market, the landing site and the entire suburb of Ggaba.
The National coordinator of the National Crime Preventers Forum Blaise Kamugisha said the activities were mainly organised to celebrate the interim order by the Deputy Chief Justice Steven Kavuma that halted the prosecution of Inspector General of Police (IGP) General Kale Kayihura by Makindye Magistrate’s court.
Kamugisha said the celebrations, on the 3rd anniversary of the formation of the Crime Preventers, were code named “the people’s power” and aimed to send a message to all detractors of the IGP Gen. Kayihura. Kamugisha told the gathering that Kayihura is a committed security officer whose only crime is serving his country diligently.
At the main venue at Ggaba SS, groups of Crime Preventers held placards praising President Yoweri Museveni for standing with Kayihura. They also commended the judiciary for what they said was a wise ruling following an application by the head of the youth desk at the NRM National Secretariat Robert Rutaro.
