Kigo, Uganda | LOUIS JADWONG & PHILLIP CORRY  | Felix Dusabe on Wednesday jumped into the top five on day one of the Uganda Golf Open, as Rwanda kept alive hopes of their first ever title in the prestitous amateur tournament.

Despite twice finding the lake instead of the greens, Dusabe 3-over-par 75 (birdies 8, 12 & 16) put him within striking distance of the leader, Andrew Ssekibejja of Uganda. Four Rwandans are competing this year.

Ssekibejja is on his home course, and carded a near flawless 1-under par, 71. He responded to 3 bogeys, with 4 birdies to end the first 18 holes as overnight leader.

Also finding the greens with ease on day one was John Paul Basabose, who hit a hole in 1 (Taylormade ball & Titleist iron/wedge-S60) on hole 15 on his way to 6th place at end of day one.

Defending champion  Joseph ‘Joe’ Cwinya-ai on the other hand struggled to get his rythm on day one at the picturesque Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa course just outside Kampala. He is 8 strokes off the pace set by Ssekibejja.

The question on everyone’s lip is will Sekibejja break that long duck? Several have been Day 1 leaders but collapsed, and that includse Richard Kidega his brother Martin Ocaya and the most recent one being Reagan Akena from Mehta Golf Club, Lugazi.

The four-day 72 hole Amateur Open is Ugandan golf’s most prestigious title. This year’s event that has Tusker Malt Lager as lead sponsor, has again come a few days after the Ladies Open that was won by Uganda’s Martha Babirye, and a week before the professional Open.

The greatest name in the history of the Uganda golf open is Sadi Onito,(RIP) who won the Uganda Open a record 12 times.
