he Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi talks to students at Nabumali in Mbale

Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Electoral Commission has launched a nationwide initiative to sensitize youth ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission told the press on Monday that the EC is currently in the Elgon region after completing activities in the Bukedi region. The sensitization exercise at Nabumali High School in Nabumali Town Council, Mbale District will thereafter continue across the country.

The primary aim of these sensitization efforts is to raise awareness among youths who are approaching voting age or are already eligible.

Byabakama urged students and young people to register to vote during the upcoming national register update, avoid involvement in election violence, and participate actively in elections by competing for various positions.

He also indicated that similar sensitization efforts will be extended to other groups, including the general public and religious leaders, as the 2026 elections approach.

Byabakama emphasized the need to prevent the misuse of youth in causing chaos and confrontations with security officers, a problem observed in previous elections.

Atha Wafukho, Head Prefect of Nabumali High School, welcomed the sensitization initiative, noting the lack of such awareness among youth. Wafukho also called on the Electoral Commission to advocate for the expedited passage of the 2019 electoral reforms to ensure free and fair elections in 2026.
