Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The eighth suspect in the double murder case of General Katumba Wamala’s daughter and driver has been remanded to Kitalya government prison.

The suspect is Huzaifa Wampa alias Kanaabe, a 34 year old and resident of Nyimba Kikomeko Bombo in Luwero district.

Wampa whose hands and legs looked swollen has been arraigned before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court presided over by the Chief Magistrate Dr Douglas Singiza, who read him six offenses which he didn’t allow him to plead to for lack of jurisdiction to try them.

The offenses are terrorism, two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, thereby adding him on the charge sheet of seven others who were already remanded about two weeks ago.

The others accused are: Sheikh Yusuf Siraji Nyanzi, Hussein Sserubula, Muhammad Kagugube alias Musiramu alias Mugisha alias Mbavumoja, Kamada Walusimbi alias Mudinka, Siriman Ayuub Kisambira alias Mukwasi Koja, Abdulaziz Ramathan Dunku and Habib Ramanthan Marjan.

Court heard that the accused persons and others still at large between the months of March 2015 and June 2021 in various places in Uganda, directly involved themselves in the murder of police personnel, Uganda Peoples Defense Forces personnel and civilians and in attacks on some police establishments.

It is alleged that this was done with intent to intimidate the public or a section of the public and for political, religious and social economic aim and indiscriminately without due regard to the safety of others or property.

The prosecution also alleges that the group and others still at large caused the unlawful death of Katumba Wamala’s daughter Brenda Nantongo Katumba and his driver Haruna Kayondo by shooting them to death on June 1st 2021, along Kisota road in Kisaasi, Nakawa division of Kampala district.

Gen Katumba Wamala survived but sustained injuries which he is currently recovering from.

According to the prosecution, on the same day, the accused persons attempted to murder the body guard of Gen Katumba Wamala, Sergent Khaled Kuboit and Boniface Mucunguzi, a by stander who was shot in the leg at the scene of crime. The State Attorney Barbara Kyomugisha informed court after the reading of the charges that investigations into this matter were still ongoing.

However, Wampa’s lawyers Geoffrey Turyamusiima and Anthony Wameli told court that their client had been tortured in custody and accordingly, the presiding Chief Magistrate ordered that he gets treatment in prison before remanding him up to August 3, 2021.

Wampa was charged amidst heavy security deployment of counter terrorism officers heavily armed with guns.

The Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga on Tuesday addressed journalists and revealed that Wampa is a member of the defunct Boda Boda 2010 association.

According to Enanga, Wampa was the second shooter who was ridden on a motorcycle by Walusimbi Kamada during the attack.

He added that when they did a search, a motorcycle registration number UEO 375D which was used in the attack was recovered before Wampa allegedly confessed to having participated in 14 murders and other cases of aggravated robbery.

Wampa becomes the eighth suspect in this case since the Attorney General’s chambers revealed that four others who were arrested have since been killed.
