Elected MPs to use strictly one vehicle – Traffic police

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Traffic Police has warned the newly elected members of parliament who will be sworn in starting Monday to strictly come with one vehicle or else risk being turned away.

The elected members for the incoming 11th parliament who were elected on 14th January are expected to be sworn-in starting Monday 17th, 2021 at Parliament .

Traffic police commander for Kampala Metropolitan police, Norman Musinga in guidelines issued on Saturday evening said all MPs elect who will be heading to parliament for the function are advised to come with one vehicle in avoidance of congestion and with only the number of persons allowed by parliament.

According to guidelines, police intend to mount some traffic diversions in areas surrounding parliament like Parliamentary Avenue that will be cut off at Kimathi Avenue, King George VI Street, Siad Barre and UBC roundabout respectively.

The Members of Parliament elect will access parliament via King George VI Street and be dropped off at the main gate, and then motor vehicles will proceed to the designated parking at National Theater, reads the statement.

After swearing-in, they will proceed to the parking via the Eastern gate of parliament opposite National Theater and exit through Dewinton road. All motorists unrelated to the function are advised to avoid Kimathi Avenue, Parliamentary Avenue, Siad Barre and Dewinton roads, the statement reads in part.

Meanwhile, traffic police has also warned all people parking along the road or near parliament that it is prohibited, and any abandoned vehicles shall be towed to central police Kampala yard at owners cost and inconvenience.

Some 527 Members of Parliament are expected to be sworn-in. According to the programme released by the office of the Clerk to Parliament, all MPs-elect will be required to be accompanied by only three people.
