Eleven arrested over death of Kamuli police constable

Kamuli, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kamuli police have rounded up eleven suspects believed to have actively participated in lynching Police constable Francis Kasolo on Sunday evening. The suspects are Isima Muzaale, Karim Walujo, Robert Mpule, Yoweri Wanjala, Yoweri Oliga, Silvestor Magala, Zabwe Wabwire, Yonah Mvabagwa, John Ekijati, Ewaku Mugatu and Alex Abiora.

The suspects are in custody at Kamuli central police station. The suspects are believed to be part of the mob that lynched Kasolo when he and another plain cloth police officer went to rescue two mob justice victims whom the community members had rounded off for alleged involvement in witchcraft-related activities in Kadungu A village in Namusagali sub county.

During the scuffle to rescue the victims, Kasolo shot dead Yosam Namwindo, one of the residents in the area. As a result, residents turned their wrath on the constable and lynched him to avenge Namwindo’s death.

The postmortem indicates that Kasolo succumbed to injuries on the head resulting from sharp objects used to assault him while Namwindo succumbed to bullet wounds. Police detectives revisited the scene of crime on Monday and managed to recover two AK-47 rifles, which some residents had grabbed from police personnel.

Busoga North police spokesperson Michael Kasadha, says that the mob justice suspects face murder charges. Kasadha says that detectives have pitched camp in different villages neighbouring the scene of crime area with the aim of arresting more suspects implicated for their involvement in the mob justice.
