End of term: Parliament to sit daily to conclude business

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  With 20 days to the dissolution of the 11th Parliament, the house will now start conducting business from Monday to Friday and morning and afternoon to complete pending business. The speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga announced the development during her communication to the plenary on Tuesday.

Apparently, the house has been sitting on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:00 pm. However, this will now change with the house sitting the entire week beginning in the morning.  The move is aimed at helping the house to conclude the budget, which is still being scrutinised by the Budget Committee of parliament. The Projected budget for the next financial year is 44.7 trillion shillings.

According to Kadaga, the 10th parliament is remaining with limited time and they still have a lot of work to complete.  She asked the legislators to get ready for the double sittings daily so that they execute their cardinal duties as outlined in the constitution.

Among some of the pending business before the committee is the investigations into the payment of up to Shillings 19 Billion to landlords who evicted squatters, the Human rights probe on Electoral violence, several bills returned by the President like the landlord and Tenant bill, the Biotechnology bill and the Genetically Modified Organism Bills among others.   

Others are; the Constitutional amendment bill 2019, the Income Tax amendment bill 2021, the traffic and road safety Act Amendment bill 2021, the sexual offences bill 2019, and the inland Water transport bill 2020. Other items before Parliament are the report on the Apaa in Amuru district, report of the Physical Infrastructure on the allocation of the former Nakawa-Naguru housing estate land to individuals and Rules committee report on contempt of Parliament by the Defense State Minister, Charles Okello Engola among others.
