Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The kingdom of Buganda is to plant 20 million tree seedlings all over the kingdom after signing a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Water and Environment as a way of conserving the environment.
The signing of the MoU was witnessed by the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga at Bulange Mengo, Buganda Minister of land, agriculture, cooperatives and environment Mariam Mayanja Nkalubo and the permanent secretary of the ministry of water and environment Alfred Okot Okidi.
Proscovia Nanyonjo Vikman, the chairperson of the Kingdom Board for Environment Conservation has said that the MoU has been signed to fulfill three objectives. These are; the reservation of the heritage and environment, the protection of natural resources such as water bodies and fulfilling the kingdom’s goal of planting 20 million indigenous tree species all over the kingdom.
The Permanent Secretary Alfred Okot Okidi has pledged to provide 20 million tree seedlings to Buganda to plant so as to revive the destroyed forests.
He says that the kingdom has been working with the ministry on various conservation efforts hence the need to formalize the collaboration with Buganda kingdom through a memorandum of understanding.
The PS says he chose Buganda kingdom out of all various institutions in Uganda because of its organized structure dating over 900 years and the kingdom’s visibility in environment and water conservation programs.
The Katikkiro has been encouraging the planting of trees at all functions and celebrations for the conservation of the environment for it is what makes Uganda the pearl of Africa.
The implementation of this MoU shall also involve community engagement through the Buganda chiefs at all levels with the support of the government to ensure that all people are rallied to protect the environment from destruction.
It shall also involve the documenting of special species in Buvuma and Ssese islands and reviving degraded wetlands like Lubigi.
