Jinja, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Busoga Kingdom officials have finalized plans to commemorate this year’s coronation anniversary of Busoga’s King HRH Gabula Nadiope IV, just a week after unveiling his queen, HRH Jovia Mutesi.
Gabula ascended to the throne as the Kyabazinga of Busoga on September 13, 2014, following a popular vote from nine royal chiefs of Busoga. In the royal council meeting, he secured 10 votes, defeating his closest rival, Columbus Wambuzi, who did not attend the meeting.
Gabula’s appointment as the King of Busoga was officially declared by the late Kawune Wakooli, the then reigning chief royal prince, for a six-year term from 2008 to 2014. At that time, the kingdom faced uncertainties in selecting the most suitable candidate for the office.
This year’s anniversary, held at the Namungalwe sub-county headquarters, will revolve around the theme of “Harnessing the Environment Through Tree Planting.” It is expected to attract around 20,000 guests from across the Busoga sub-region.
Michael Kifubangabo, the spokesperson for Busoga Kingdom, announced that they have initiated flagship activities, including tree planting. Over 10,000 seedlings were distributed to more than 20 government and private schools across Iganga district.
Additionally, they have organized a free medical camp where over 2,000 patients can access treatment for non-communicable diseases, family planning services, malaria treatment, youth-friendly services, physiotherapy, and more, emphasizing the importance of community health.
Hussein Muyonjo, known as Swengere and Busoga’s digital ambassador, highlighted that these events provide a clear platform for the youth to engage with and celebrate their cultural heritage. He encouraged young people to actively participate in activities that promote Busoga Kingdom’s heritage rather than leaving such opportunities solely in the hands of the elderly.
Uthman Kalyowa, a youthful entrepreneur, recognized the coronation anniversary as a significant event that attracts crowds and provides a platform for businesses to trade and market their products. He challenged youths to attend not just for entertainment but also to network with influential stakeholders who can offer insights into potential business opportunities and skills.
Meanwhile, Patrick Mudungu, the head of cultural institutions in Busoga Kingdom, described the coronation anniversary as a testament to the progressive reign of Gabula, benefiting both him and his subjects over the past nine years. He called upon the general public to actively participate in Busoga Kingdom’s cultural affairs, promoting their cultural heritage to the world.
