Express FC to use Nakivubo for the upcoming 2024-2025 season

Hamz Stadium Nakivubo

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Express Football Club has announced its departure from Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, after 33 years of calling it home. The club, through its CEO Ashiraf Miiro, confirmed that Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, recently rebranded as Hamz Stadium Nakivubo, will be its new home ground going forward. This marks the second time Express FC will use Nakivubo as their home stadium.

“On behalf of Express Football Club, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the 33 incredible years we have spent at Wankulukuku Stadium. Your unwavering support and dedication have played an instrumental role in our journey and success,” reads part of the statement.

“Wankulukuku Stadium has not only been a home for our team but also a sanctuary for our fans, a place where countless moments of joy, triumph, and even heartache have bonded us all together. As we look forward to the future, we have made the difficult decision to move to Nakivubo Stadium for the 2024-2025 season,” the statement continues.

Express FC began using Wankulukuku Stadium in 1991 after shifting from Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, which it shared with KCC FC, Coffee, Nsambya, Spear Motors, and Uganda Airlines. The move to Wankulukuku was aimed at establishing a home-field advantage to secure major championships, as the club had not won the league since 1975.

Since then, the club has had a significant history with the stadium, winning four league titles in 1993, 1995, 1996, and 2020, as well as several Uganda Cup trophies.

Although the club indicated that their decision to leave Wankulukuku is driven by a desire to grow and reach new heights, URN understands that there are plans to redevelop the stadium, as it is expected to be part of the training grounds for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

It is worth noting that in the previous season, Express FC shared Wankulukuku Stadium with their archrivals, SC Villa, the defending champions of the Star Times Uganda Premier League.
