Bududa, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Farmers in Bukibokolo sub county in Bududa district have rejected beans and maize seeds delivered under the Operation Wealth Creation. Bududa district received over 15,000 kilograms of maize and beans seeds.
As a result, the district sent over 150 kilograms for distribution to farmers in Bukibokolo sub-county for planting to enhance food security. However, the targeted beneficiaries rejected the seeds saying that they don’t germinate even when they are handled with extreme care.
They also argue that the seeds have come at the wrong time when the planting season is over. Richard Wabukabasi, a farmer in Mukono village blamed district authorities manning the OWC program for wasting taxpayer’s money under the disguise of helping them.
According to Wabukabasi, farmers are in great need but they are not helped as expected. Robert Kutosi, the chairman of Namitati village in Bukari parish asked his voters not to take the seeds, saying that he will not allow the officials to collect their signatures in the disguise of helping them to drive their selfish agenda.
He asked OWC authorities to always consult farmers whenever they want to procure anything for them. Peter Wekona, another farmer said they would have given them animals instead of seeds and coffee seedlings.
Milton Kamoti Wasunguyi, the Bududa district chairman asked farmers not to sabotage the government programs in their sub-counties if they are to gain out of them. He said they should calm down if they want the best out of the district.
Col. George Wakamuke, the OWC coordinator in Bududa district asked the farmers to try the seeds since they were verified by NAADS and the district production department to ascertain their ability to germinate.
