Father arrested for concealing defilement of eight year old daughter

Bunyangabu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in Bunyangabu district is holding a man for concealing the defilement of his daughter.

The victim, an eight year old girl and a primary two pupil at Kiboota Primary School in Buheesi town council was allegedly defiled by her grandfather Joseph Kaganda.

Hudson Opio, the officer in charge of Buheesi police post says that when the victim told her father that she was being defiled by Kaganda, she was told to remain silent not to embarrass the family.

According to Opio, one of the residents reported the case to police after she saw the child had difficulty in walking. When she was asked what had happened to her, at first she deceived him that she had a slight accident with her leg.

Dissatisfied with her answer, the resident threatened to cane her and that is when she revealed that Kaganda had been defiling her.

Opio adds that her grandfather, who is currently on the run, repeatedly defiled her for six months.

Cosy Nyakoojo Katutu, a social worker in Buheesi town council says that they were forced to petition the Resident District Commissioner who convened an urgent meeting in the town council to discuss the matter leading to the arrest of the victim’s father Steven Jusi, over negligence and concealing the crime he had knowledge about.

According to Katutu, Kaganda took advantage of the absence of the victim’s parents to commit the offence.

A medical report from Editene International Medical Centre seen by Uganda Radio Network indicates that the girl’s hymen was ruptured due to forced penetration.

Lameck Kigozi, the Rwenzori Regional Police Commander says that the police are also investigating some of its officers for frustrating investigations and mismanaging the case.

He however declined to reveal the names of the officers.

Amos Baguma, a resident of Buheesi towncouncil blames parents lack of cooperation and hunger for quick money for the numerous cases of defilement. He explains that some parents strike deals with the offenders to withdraw cases placed against them.
