Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Forum for Democratic Change-FDC youth and women delegates have elected new leaders for the FDC National Youth and Women Leagues.
The over 200 delegates who participated in the voting on Thursday at the party headquarters in Najjanakumbi elected Francis Adepo as the Chairperson of the National Youth League, deputized by Phiona Nakayenze representing the Eastern region.
Ibrahim Sserugga was voted Vice Chairperson of Central, George Onzima as Vice Chairperson of Northern, and Amos Bacwa as Vice Chairperson of Western Uganda.
Also elected was Mary Gorrety Atemo as general secretary, Andrew Ssebitosi as secretary for Mobilization, Mercy Marion Alupo as the treasurer, and Patricia Elubu Ayoo as Secretary for Research and publicity. Others are Catherine Adiro Okot as Secretary for Legal, Human Rights, and Constitutional Affairs, Derrick Mugabo as secretary for Education, Sports, and Students, Nansubuga Shamim as head for Women’s Youth League and Timothy Muganzi as secretary for Health and Environment.
Meanwhile, earlier in the case, Brian Okori was disqualified from the race for not being a delegate. Okori who said that he was nominated weeks back by the party Electoral Commission was standing for the position of General Secretary. He said the party constitution doesn’t bar him from contesting despite not being a delegate.
According to the guidelines issued by the party Electoral Commission, delegates eligible to vote were; District Youth Chairpersons, District Youth Vice Chairpersons, 20 Institutional Chairpersons, and current Youth Executive leaders. The party Electoral Commission Chairperson Boniface Bamwenda Toterebuka disqualified Okori on the grounds that he was ineligible to participate in the exercise.
FDC also conducted elections for the Women’s League where Agnes Kisakye beat her only contender Hellen Achan to become Chairperson of the league.
Other new leaders under the Women League are; Juliet Agnes Kadama who comes as the vice Chairperson in charge of the Eastern, Zam Nanfuka for Central, Florence Akia Alupu for Northern, and Beatrice Kabasiita Adyeri for the Western region.
Oliver Nairuba is the general secretary, Dorothy Lunkuse is the treasurer general, Judith Joan Akullu is secretary for research and policy, Janet Oroma is the secretary of Legal human rights and Constitutional affairs, Mercy Ayo secretary for Education, sports, and students, Teddy Nyaangoma secretary for health and environment and Esther Biira, secretary for Mobilisation.
The elections come after the FDC Najjanankumbi faction held its delegates conference on 6th October at Patidar Samaj Sports Ground; Lugogo – Kampala and elected a National Executive Committee-NEC. All leaders on the committees shall occupy office for five years ending in 2028.
Meanwhile, another group of FDC based at Katonga is also planning an election of the NEC and National League Committees next year 2024. The Katonga group emerged following allegations that the Najjanankumbi -FDC led by Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the party president, and Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the Secretary-General had received money from President Yoweri Museveni to mortgage the party.
