Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A fire outbreak has gutted OKLA Club Bar – Restaurant in the city, destroying property worth millions of shillings.

The fire broke which out at the club located along Matia Mulumba Road in Old Kampala zone II at around midday is suspected to have started as a result of a short-circuit.

One of the workers in the restaurant told the fire fighters at the scene that the fire started from the fridge in the restaurant side which spread up to the kitchen.

All kitchen materials and furniture at the restaurant were burnt up. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango said no life was lost and nobody was injured.

“The police fire prevention and rescue services responded with four fire trucks and an ambulance. They managed to extinguish the fire and saved other adjacent properties and buildings,” Onyaongo noted.

Police have also blamed the business proprietor of OKLA businesses, an Eritrean national, for being so negligent as not to install fire extinguishers, yet the place accommodates a big number of revelers.

The Old Kampala fire comes four days after the Police’s Fire and Rescue services indicated that negligence is still the major contributor in the number of fire incidents that happened in 2023.

Police Fire and Rescue Services Director AIGP Joseph Mugisa said negligence contributed to 192 fires that occurred country wide.
