Mayuge, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Mayuge district is investigating circumstances under which 10 fish ponds belonging to Mayuge Integrated Fish Farm were poisoned leading to the death of 51,000 pieces of fish valued at 350 million Shillings.
The farm, owned by a group of 30 youths, had 21,000 pieces of mudfish species and 30,000 pieces of tilapia fish species, which were slated for harvest on Monday next week. Emmanuel Mbusa, an employee at the farm says that he noticed fish floating on the ponds on Thursday morning and later learnt that all the fish had been killed.
Edward Musiiba, the farm manager says that they had stocked enough feeds for the fish and were already planning for pond restocking after their harvest. He calls for support from the Ministry of Agriculture to rescue them from the losses incurred.
John Takwana, a director at the farm says that they had hoped to expand their farm after earning from the fish harvests, but they have instead suffered a setback.
Mayuge acting District Police Commander Christopher Ssendijja says that scene of crime officers inspected the ponds and recovered three empty containers of herbicides, which, together with water and fish samples will be submitted to the government analytical laboratories for further examination.
