Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Luweero district COVID-19 task force is overwhelmed by demands of food.
On Saturday Luweero District Task Force led by Resident District Commissioner Phoebe Namulindwa and LCV Chairman Ronald Ndawula embarked on distribution of food targeting people affected by the lockdown.
Ndawula says that by Wednesday, the Task Force had distributed relief items to 1,300 families targeting 10 people per village. The beneficiaries included older persons, people with disabilities and widows among others.
The district relief items include maize flour, sugar, bananas, salt, soap and other items to help them survive in the lockdown.
Ndawula adds that the relief items have been mobilized from individuals and organizations. He adds that they expect government to support the district so that more people receive food.
Ndawula explained that over 200,000 people in the district are in need of food which is not yet secured and appealed to the government to come to their rescue.
But the distribution has left communities bitter against the task force members saying the relief items were inadequate and other described them as mockery.
Namugera Nkokonyole the LCV Chairman of Kakoolo zone in Luweero town council says that although he is happy that at least 10 older persons received the items in the zone, many were left yearning for support.
Joseph Kasule the LCI Chairman of Butanza Wabinyonyi village in Katikamu sub county explained that inadequate food distributed has created conflicts and hatred towards members of the task force.
Kasule explains that 300 out of 600 people in his village need relief items but only 10 people benefited from the donation.
At Butanza Wabinyonyi and Butanza Kisuule villages, the residents criticized the District Task Force members saying the distribution was a mockery and left many starving.
Others criticized the Central government for considering Kampala city and Wakiso districts yet they are also starving.
The Luweero Resident District Commissioner Phoebe Namulindwa acknowledged that the demand was high but asked the communities to appreciate the little that has been distributed so far.
Namulindwa says they will continue to mobilize more relief items. He appealed to government for support.
On Tuesday, President Museveni extended the lockdown by 21 days. The Ministry of Health has so far confirmed 55 cases of covid-19.
