Wakiso, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative-FHRI is investigating the attack on two journalists by the military in Wakiso district on Wednesday.
Amon Kayanja of Salt Media and Teddy Nakaliga from Spark TV accuse military personnel of beating them while covering protests by residents of Kayunga trading center in Wakiso town council over the prolonged power outage in their area.
John Bosco Tembo, a research associate at the Foundation of Human Rights Initiative recently met the assaulted victims to document their ordeal. According to Tembo, they intervened to help the affected journalists to get justice.
He reveals that they have registered over 20 cases of assault involving journalists in the course of their work.
Amon Kayanja, one of the victims of the assault, says that nobody from security has engaged them since they were attacked on Wednesday last.
He says that they communicated to the UPDF spokesperson, Brig Flavia Byekwaso on their plight but has worked out yet.
Teddy Nakaliga, the second victim says that no one from security has approached her concerning what happened, adding that even police declined to enter their case not until human rights activists intervened.
UPDF spokesperson, Brig Flavia Byekwaso couldn’t be reached for comment. However, she earlier on told URN that she heard about the incident was yet to get the details.
