Koboko, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Koboko district Grade One Magistrate Court has sentenced four inmates to two years in jail for escaping from lawful custody.
On Wednesday, 18 inmates escaped from Gbukutu government prison in Koboko district. Four of the escapees were recaptured as eight others fled to the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
Those who were rearrested included Gilbert Enitu, 20 years, Edema Patrick, 25 years, Fudribo Godwin, 19 years, and Ceaser MakBul.
On Thursday, the prosecution told the court presided over by Grade One Magistrate Peter Guchina that the four inmates overpowered the prison wader John Bosco Ocelep who was supervising them during a general cleanliness exercise at the prison boma grounds and fled towards the border of Uganda and Congo.
The Resident State Attorney Paul Ogwang pleaded for a deterrent sentence arguing that in the process of pursuing the escapees, bullets were discharged which would be fatal to themselves and the civilian population as well.
In his ruling, Guchina jailed the four for two years. He said that the inmates were not apologetic for the offence they committed.
On Thursday, the Prisons Spokesperson said that security personnel are still hunting for the other eight inmates.
In September, 224 inmates escaped from Moroto Prison and fled with 15 guns.
