Four She Cranes players head to Malaysia

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | At least four She-Cranes players are currently in Malaysia to undertake professional assessments, as they contemplate securing permanent positions with top clubs in the Malaysian Netball Super League.

The move comes barely two months after the She-Cranes earned the distinction of being the best team in Africa, following their exceptional performance at the recently concluded Netball World Cup.

The four players who have received invitations include the KCCA Netball duo; Shadia Ssegujja Nassanga and Shaffie Nalwanja, currently associated with KL Wildcats, Faridah Kadondi from Makindye Weyonje and last season’s top scorer Christine Namulumba, both affiliated to the Perak Phoenix. But the quartet that left the country last month is yet to get professional contracts.

“The two clubs have a couple of pre-season activities and they want to test these players before the season starts. However, there is a big possibility that the four players will eventually sign professional contracts if they agree on terms with their respective clubs,” a source told URN.

Once they sign professional contracts, they will join a growing contingent of Ugandan netball talents who have made the leap to professional netball outside Uganda.

In September, URN reported that She Cranes player Hanisha Muhameed had joined Bartercard Surrey Storm Netball Club in the United Kingdom’s Super League a few weeks after the end of the Netball World Cup.

Other professional players include Peace Proscovia, who is in the United Kingdom, Mary Cholhok Nuba who plies her trade with the Loughborough Lightning Netball Club, while Stellah Oyella represents the Strathclyde Sirens Netball Club in Scotland.

Meanwhile, sources suggest that several other She Cranes stars have garnered interest from professional clubs outside Uganda and negotiations are reportedly ongoing for more players to make the leap to the professional ranks.
