Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Government has been accused of abdicating its role in stopping female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga says that the government has failed in its role and has left the FGM fight to Non-Governmental Organisations-NGOs.

Kadaga was speaking on Thursday at a meeting with officials from Ministry of Gender, Office of the Prime minister and representatives from FGM affected districts and donors.

Kadaga also tasked the government to account for 200m shillings that was allocated to the Sebei region to fight FGM.

The State Minister for Gender Peace Mutuuzo said that government supports an NGO REACH – Reproductive, Educative and Community Health which should account for the money.

Christopher Songhor Chepkurui the Chairman LCV Kapchorwa District says several NGOs are funding FGM as a measure of sustainability.

Beatrice Chelagat the Director-General REACH says the government disburses money at the end of the year and can’t be utilised.
