Gulu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Gulu District Local Government has approved the rehabilitation of 74.1 kilometres of roads worth 10 Billion Shillings.
Patrick Kinyera, the Gulu District Secretary for Works and Technical Services says that the rehabilitation will close the gaps of maintenance of the roads in the District.
The roads include 10 km of Abako to Agoro –Oyella road, Lagot- Libi to Abalokodi of 8.3km, Bongo Tyet to Tulaliya of 3km, Tee-Ladwong via Lugore Prisons to Mede Centre of 10.3km, all in Patiko Sub County.
Others are the road connecting Paicho Centre to Otege and Pukony Sub County of 7.5km and Lalworo road via Kinene to Bulkur of 12.7 km, also in Paicho Sub County.
The roads approved from Bungatira Sub County are Lagara to Monroac of 14km and Akonyibedo via Owak to Pabwo of 8.3 km.
Kinyera explains that the roads will be rehabilitated under the project for the restoration of livelihoods in Northern Uganda adding that the District is in the process of awarding the contract.
“We are waiting for the guidance from the Solicitor General in regards to the contract but will not take us long and we expect the commissioning of the work soon”
Margret Arach, the LCIII Chairperson Patiko Sub County says the rehabilitating Tee-Ladwong; one of the worst roads in the area will improve access to Patiko Health Centre III which has been a problem.
Alfred Opiyo, a 21-year-old Boda Boda cyclist from Awach Paduny in Awach Sub County noted that maintenance of the roads will reduce the accident in the District.
Opiyo revealed that two people lost their lives in an accident from a road connecting Gulu City to Awach Sub County where the new District Headquarters is, approximately 18km last year due to its poor status.
“The road is bad and we have increased transport fares from 5,000 shillings to 14,000 Shillings and we hope that it’s equally considered for rehabilitation” Opiyo added.
However, according to the Engineering report from the District, out of 980 kilometres of roads in Gulu District, 480 of them have remained impassable due to a lack of funds for rehabilitation.
